Abstract

The objective of this study is to compare the categorization of women and men on the first page of Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, under the light of Critical Linguistics, with the support of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG). For this purpose, the study shall answer the following questions: (a) How often are women or men cited on the first page of Folha de S. Paulo newspaper? (b) What type of activities are women and men cited on these pages engaged in? (c) Which lexico-grammatical choices does the ideology behind the image of woman and man reveal?

Claudia Moreira dos Santos, ACLISF – PUCSP, Brasil

Cláudia Moreira dos Santos is a Portuguese teacher. Nowadays she is a doctoral student in Applied Linguistics at LAEL/PUC-SP and has a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics at the same Institution. Her research interests have focused on the relationship between grammar and discourse with a focus on Systemic-Functional Grammar and Critical Linguistics.

Sumiko Nishitani Ikeda, Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, Brasil

Sumiko Nishitani Ikeda holds a Post Doctorate in Applied Linguistics from the Osaka University of Foreign Languages. She has been teaching at LAEL (supervising Post Graduation in Linguistics at Pontifícia Universidade Católica of São Paulo, as a full professor). Areas of interest: evaluation, metaphor, critical linguistics under the theoretical support of Systemic-Functional Grammar.
