Penfriend: a Project for Writing in English

Abstract

This article aims to present the results of a teaching project called “penfriend”, developed in an English as a foreign language classroom of an Elementary School located in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The project’s main function was to motivate reading and writing in the English language, by means of correspondence between Brazilian and English students, for a period of 6 months. Through the interaction and participation of the involved students, it was possible to notice an important improvement in their development. Besides, this project proved to be a great way for students to know new cultures, habits and people.

Adriana Sales Zardini is an English teacher at CEFET-MG and holds a Master Degree in Technological Education at Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica de Minas Gerais (CEFET-MG). She has been working as a teacher for the last 5 years and her main interests include CALL, ESP, blogs in education and educational software.

José Wilson da Costa, CEFET-MG, Belo Horizonte, Brasil

José Wilson da Costa holds a Doctor’s degree in Information Science from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. For the last years, he has been working at Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica de Minas Gerais and Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais. His main interests include computing, educational software and distance learning.
