Abstract

We would hardly find a teacher who wouldn’t recognize the importance of autonomy in education nowadays. Nevertheless, any attempt to put learner autonomy into practice shows how complex this process is. This complexity happens especially because the educational context is imbued of beliefs and attitudes that resist to innovation. This is not different when it concerns developing learner autonomy in foreign language learning. This paper therefore shows some of these beliefs and attitudes that resist to autonomy and the position of the authors towards them.
