Abstract

This study aims to create a reading instrument (Diagram of Boxes) which would allow students to classify and summarize pieces of information in a text. The work was based on three steps: a pre-test, the development of reading strategies and the assessment of such instrument. The subjects are ten randomly-selected native speakers, studying Spanish as their first language. Results show that the students managed to work in pairs to comment on linguistic aspects and the content of the texts. After reading many different texts, they were able to comprehend, write and compose oral texts of many kinds. The statistic results show significant improvements to those who followed the Diagram in opposition to others who didn’t.
