Lexical knowledge in the teaching of reading in foreign language

Abstract

A study of the literature which supports the teaching of reading in foreign language highlights an important relation between lexical competence and comprehension, revealing the necessity of more significant pedagogical proposals to the teaching of reading which are guided by both bottom-up and top-down strategies.

Patrícia Nora de Souza

Patrícia Nora de Souza holds an MA in Theory of Literature from the University of Juiz de Fora –MG– where she is a professor of English. She is also a doctorate student in Applied Linguistics at UNICAMP. Her research interests are the Teaching of Reading in Foreign Language and Distance Education.

Lúcia Kopschitz Xavier Bastos

Presently working at the Applied Linguistics Department – IEL, UNICAMP – , Lúcia Kopschitz X. Bastos has a PhD in Linguistics. Her main activities involve teaching and reasearch, both on English and Portuguese as a Second Language.
